"Apathy... or Unleashed"
by Mark Clark
We recently had an outside group schedule a youth leadership retreat here at the camp. They apologized for their lower than anticipated reservations. The theme of the retreat: "Apathy" (you know, you can’t make stuff like this up).
Jonathan Rauch, columnist and self proclaimed atheist, wrote in the May 2003 Atlantic Monthly celebrating what he calls "apatheism". Rauch defines this as "a disinclination to care all that much about one's own religion and even a stronger disinclination to care about other people's". He particularly celebrates this tendency in American Christians. They profess a belief, but don’t seem to care about anyone else’s religion or relationship with Christ.
Rauch attributes this to a cultural effort to temper the religious mindset and spiritual passions. He looks forward to a day in which "people who may themselves be members of religious communities, but who are neither controlled by godly passions nor concerned about the (nonviolent, non-coercive) religious beliefs of others."
Are we guilty of apathy? Is there a lack of passion in our relationship with Christ and a concern for those who face eternity without Him? Jesus always judged the value of something by its fruit. Are we fruitful? Are we showing others the reality of a healthy relationship with Christ? Do we show them He loves them? Are we prepared to explain our faith?
"Unleashed…Here I Am" is this summer’s theme here at LACC. We want the guys and gals who come our way this summer to leave with a passion to share the love of Christ. Your prayers, participation, and provision make this possible. Help us "Unleash" a generation for Christ!
